CD is a digital optical disc data storage format. It was developed by Sony and Philips in 1982 and released in 1983. CDs can be playback-only, recordable, and rewritable. The standard CD has a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 inches) and can store up to 700 megabytes of data.

The CD's storage method is based on the laser technology. Data is encoded on a metallized layer of the disc and read by a laser. The laser beam is reflected differently by the pits and the flat areas between them, and these differences are interpreted as binary data. This optical principle allows for high data density and data transfer rates compared to other storage media at the time.

CDs were first used for storing and playing back audio recordings, but their data storage capabilities soon expanded to include computer data, video, and other applications. The introduction of the CD-ROM in 1985 allowed CDs to be used for storing and distributing software, documents, and other digital content. The CD-R and CD-RW formats, introduced in the 1990s, enabled users to create their own CDs.

The popularity of CDs grew rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, largely replacing the vinyl record and audio cassette as the preferred physical medium for music distribution. CDs offered a number of advantages over these older formats, including higher audio quality, more durable construction, and the ability to skip between tracks. The compact size and portable nature of CDs also made them well-suited for personal music players and car audio systems.

However, the rise of digital music and online distribution in the 2000s led to a decline in CD sales. Streaming services and digital downloads gradually replaced physical media as the primary means of music consumption. Nevertheless, CDs continue to be used for certain applications, such as music archiving, in-car audio, and computer data storage, though their overall market share has diminished.

Despite the changing landscape of digital media, the CD remains an important and influential technology in the history of audio and data storage. Its development and widespread adoption paved the way for many of the digital storage and playback technologies we use today.
