The CD, or compact disc, is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. It was originally designed for storing and playing back audio recordings, but later expanded to accommodate data storage for computers, video, and other applications.

In addition to audio, CDs were also adapted for data storage, leading to the development of CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. CD-ROM discs could be used to distribute software, digital documents, and multimedia content. Recordable CD-R discs allowed users to create their own custom CDs, while CD-RW discs enabled rewritable storage.

Despite the rise of digital music streaming and online distribution, the CD format persisted for many years as a physically distributed medium for music and other data. Many consumers continued to prefer the tangible ownership and higher sound quality of CDs compared to compressed digital audio files.

In recent years, however, the CD has gradually declined in popularity, as streaming services and digital downloads have become the dominant mode of music consumption. Nonetheless, the compact disc remains an important part of the history of digital storage and audio technology, and continues to be used in certain applications and by audiophiles who value its sound quality.
